All Work and No Play... [Jan. 8th, 2006|09:57 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[mood |thoughtfulthoughtful]

Geesh, I cannot believe it has been this long since I posted! I have looked at some of the posting from my Friends pages, but that has been a while too. I have been trying to work a bit of overtime to help us out, but that leaves me almost too tired to sit at the computer to read e-mail or check out blogs.

I finished a red lacy hooded scarf, a set of scarf and matching wrist warmers on the blue KK loom, and a "practice" Magic scarf on the yellow. The wrist warmers are not that great, but the scarf I made was pretty nice - I skipped every other peg, and ended up with a nice ribbed look when the scarf is relaxed. The magic scarf was done in Simply Soft, so it didn't "transform" as much as the fun fur ones do, I think. However, the girls at worked like it.

Right now I am working on a Potter-esque tube scarf on the red KK loom for my son. It is not true to the pic as it is in two colors he picked out, which are not "house" colors, and the gauge is so huge on the KK looms. The main thing is that I am working it in the trapped bar pattern. However, I didn't swatch, so my large bar is about two rows too big. Good thing I am not aiming for accuracy! LOL.

I really need to work more on hubby's afghan, I have all the blues now. After that, perhaps I will buy some yarn for a shrug on the yellow KK loom.

:-( [Dec. 18th, 2005|07:20 am]

My son is leaving today to stay with his dad for a couple of weeks. I always hate seeing him go. Don't know what I am going to do in a few years when he goes out on his own for good.

New Toy, Finished Object [Dec. 17th, 2005|11:16 am]
I finally finished a white lacy hooded scarf from the Crochet in a Day book that had been sitting a couple of months. I ran out of main yarn, and thought I had found some in my stash (unmarked) to match that I finished with. But, the added on end wound up being shorter, even though it was the same number of rows. So, it must have been a thinner yarn. Oopsies.

I am making the same scarf for a friend at work. In exchange, she bought me a set of the Knifty Knitter rake knitting looms that have been available in so many places!!! YAY!!! I made a baby hat pretty quickly, but I think I must have my tension way to tight, because it ended up looking like it would only fit a preemie or a baby doll. Now I am working on mittens from the Provocraft website, although I am stuck at the thumb part. :-p

I need to get one more shade of blue for my hubby's afghan, then I can finish up half the squares. I am going to have to hit Hobby Lobby to get the purples, because Wally World doesn't carry 5 different shades. They only have 4, and then one of those isn't in the same value family - it is a little too red, I think. And I need to pick up two more skeins of the red yarn for the scarf.

I am SOOOO boring! [Dec. 11th, 2005|07:41 pm]
[mood |amusedamused]

You are dishcloth cotton.

You are Dishcloth Cotton.
You are a very hard worker, most at home when you're at home. You are thrifty and seemingly born to clean. You are considered to be a Plain Jane, but you are too practical to notice.

What kind of yarn are you?

Born to clean? ME????

The Experiment [Dec. 11th, 2005|12:30 pm]
[mood |anxiousanxious]

Perhaps it was appropriate hubby was watching "Weird Science" this morning. I am attempting dressing in the crock-pot using low-carb bread. I had tried 2 slices for a sandwich, and did not like it, so it has been sitting. It should be well past stale. This might not turn out any good because I had to use onion powder, plus not even the mold likes this stuff. :-p

On the needle... [Dec. 10th, 2005|03:16 pm]
[mood |worriedworried]

I had an "a-ha" moment last night. I am trying to figure out knitting, and my stitches were twisting. I finally figured out I was inserting my needle on the knit stitches wrong. However, now that I am working the stitches correctly, my gauge is really loose. Of course, I am using a pretty big needle, so maybe I just have to accept it and work on getting more even. I am working on a very basic scarf in a basket-weave pattern that was a free Red Heart flyer in some "stash" thread. The pattern called for smaller needles, but I don't have the money to invest in more right now, and bigger on a scarf is OK. It was supposed to use just half a skein in gauge, so the scarf was 50". I may just decide to keep going until the skein is finished and have a really long scarf. I haven't measured since last night, but I am probably around 24" right now. Most of that is in my funky, twisted stitches though. :-p I have some cotton yarn, so I may try to get some smaller needles and make some wash cloths next. Well, after working more on hubby's afghan.

Money has got him even more depressed than I have been. He feels very worthless being jobless right now, and has decided to wean himself off his meds because they have not really brought his BP down. The doctor knows, and gave him the process by which to go off it. He says he is never going to a doctor again, which really concerns me.

I hate driving [Dec. 7th, 2005|09:04 pm]
[mood |coldcold]

I hate cars (well, having to operate them and have them operational), and I hate having to commute. WHY is it if I am going the speed limit (to baby my temporary cruddy tire), all of the sudden everyone is driving like I am a road hazard??? I was even in the right most lane! :-p

I miss being hooked up to natural gas - having an LPG tank that can run out sucks. And, somehow, one of my electric heaters has walked off. It's gonna get very very chilly.

On the plus side, I scored two more skeins of yarn for my afghan today. The girl I am teaching to crochet gave me money to pick her up a couple of skeins and told me to keep the rest of the money, so it got invested! She is very determined to get this down, and it is gratifying to see. Another girl at work wanted to learn, but spent all of 1 minute on it before giving up. Oh well. Maybe she will try again. I think the info on learning to crochet is invaluable in terms of having diagrams to show someone, especially since it is free. Much nicer than trying to suggest a certain book for someone to buy - hook them THEN get them shelling out money, LOL.

Is it possible to have PAS with free patterns? I am getting obsessive about hitting the free pattern hooks when I go to WalMart - and then passing them out at work when I have extras, LOL. I found a really cute baby cardigan and matching hat and bootie patterns from Bernat the other day. One of the girls in our group is preggers, and I would like to make that for her.

To bid... [Dec. 6th, 2005|09:57 pm]
Or not to bid. I love finding craft books cheap on eBay... but I worry about getting carried away. I let one slip away, "24-Hour Crochet Projects", for only $3.25. Yeah, money is tight, but still.... sigh.

WIP [Dec. 5th, 2005|09:19 pm]
Here is a scan of what the afghan I am working on is SUPPOSED to look like:

No, this is not my work. As mentioned previously, this is from Annie's Attic "Ultimate Book of Quilt Afghans". The colors I am going to end up using will not be quite so pale - it was like pulling teeth to get my husband to let me use pale blue. :-p

Bad luck hit again - we were out today, about 40 miles from home, when we got a flat. Out in the middle of nowhere. And it was in the 30's. And hubby has had this cough which he can't beat which worries me. So I was walking down the road trying to find a phone to call for help. It is times like this I wish I had one of those prepaid cell phones, although we live in dead-zone for cell phones.

Off the tangent of bad luck, just noting some works in mind:
Wonder Woman logo afghan
Wonder Woman logo halter
Leia "metal bikini" halter
Xena "armor" halter
Crocheted scarf based on the new Harry Potter scarves
Learning to knit!!!

By the way, the clickable thumbnail is hosted in ImageVenue. This is the first I have tried using it, so we will see how it goes. I may end up using it for things we post on eBay, so I don't have to try to use "Paint" for so much image editing, LOL.
